I wrote this poem the day after Dr. Christine Blasey Ford gave her testimony. This picture was taken in Chicago. I use this picture as a mirror of how many women feel left alone to fend for themselves in our world of politics and power.
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford September 28, 2018
You are not enough
You are a woman
You speak your truth
But not enough to sway the men
You are credible, honest,
You are not enough
If you were a man
Maybe.
But you are a woman
Your voice is soft but steady
Your demeanor as well
You are not in power
You speak of being overcome by a man
While another man laughed
You are overcome by men now
Before millions of men and women
Some laugh
Again
Different
But the same
You are a woman.
You have achieved
You’ve abided by the rules
You are a success
But you are a woman
And you are still not enough.
As a little girl
You were told to work hard
You did
You overcame obstacles
But you will never conquer men.
Some men in power will always defeat
Powerful women
But you will never be enough.
Because the men know you are more
Than enough
And you said too much
And because they can
You remain not enough.
